Newsgroup Changes March 31, 2008

jellico.com outsources it's newsgroups to supernews. They've always done a good job for us. I received an email yesterday informing me that Supernews has sold parts of it's operation (including us) to Giganews. From the little bit of reading I've done on this today, I gather that this is probably going to be good, evidently Giganews keeps older newsgroup postings around longer, etc.

No merger of this sort goes smoothly, however. According to the email I received, on March 31 our (jellico.com's) newsgroup access will be moved over to Giganews, and this will involve resetting newsgroup header numbering. What this means as far as you are concerned is that newsgroups probably will not work for you correctly unless you do some things in your newsgroup program. I'm going to copy the instructions from the email I received here since I don't know for sure what program you are using to get newsgroups (I imagine all of you probably use Outlook Express for that, I know I do, so you'll probably want to follow the instructions for Outlook Express).

NewsBin Pro:

  1. Select all newsgroups you are subscribed to. To select all newsgroups, click on the first group then hold the shift key and click on the last group.
  2. . From the Groups menu, select "Post Storage", then "Delete Stored Posts".
  3. Download headers again. For large binary newsgroups, this may take a long time. To limit the headers, right-click on the newsgroup name and select "Download Special".

NewsLeecher:

  1. Select all newsgroups you are subscribed to. To select all newsgroups, click on the first group then hold the shift key and click on the last group.
  2. Right-click on the selected newsgroups. From the popup menu, click "Selected: Purge Group".
  3. Download headers again. For large binary newsgroups, this may take a long time. To limit the headers, right-click on the newsgroup name, select "Update" and choose the number of headers you would like.

Thunderbird and Outlook Express:

Because these are primarily email clients, there is no way to purge headers. You will need to remove your current server, create a new server for Supernews, download the list of available newsgroups, and re-subscribe to your desired newsgroups.

Forte Agent:

  1. Select the folder containing your newsgroups, right-click and select "Purge".
  2. Download headers again. For large binary newsgroups, this may take a long time.

If you have any questions or need help doing this, please give our office a call. You might ask for me (Lisa Casey) since I probably know a little bit more about the newsgroups than the other people working here at jellico.com, Inc.
