Crazy Quilt Update

June 10, 2004

The New face of Crazy Quilt

Residents of Newcomb, TN have noticed a lot of activity at the site where the Crazy Quilt Friendship Center burned down in 2002. After a great deal of planning, much discussion and several setbacks, construction finally got underway and the new 5000 square foot building is up! Much of the interior work needs to be finished but the staff plans to move in by the end ofMay.

The Board of Directors and the staff want to thank everyone who contributed to the success of the building fund. By careful stewardship the cost of the rebuilding did not exceed the amount in the building fund.

Unfortunately several things have come up that we had not anticipated. The septic tank, which we thought was adequate, needs to be replaced and the parking lot must be paveed to comply with handicapped access laws. We do not have enough in the building fund to cover these new costs. Crazy Quilt has need of additional donations to cover added expenses. Are you able to contribute once again to this worthy cause?

What does Crazy Quilt do for our community

Crazy Quilt Crafts:
This allows the women in the area an opportunity to subsidize their income by making crafts in their homes and get a set amount for each item. This program was started in 1977.
Food pantry/Emergency aid:
Through this program (started in 1976) folks in the community can receive food during hard times. We attempt to also offer assistance with high utility bills during the winter months, especially to families who have small children and the elderly.
Mountain Arts Program:
Started several years ago, it has allowed area youth a place where they can learn and share in a safe environment. Various professionals have shared their talents and skills. The program has a very high success rate and we are proud of the youth who participate.
Christmas Party:
Started in the very early years with six children receiving Hardees gift certificates. Now over 500 children receive a new toy, treat bag and visit with Santa. Everything is donated by our great sponsors.
Workshops:
Ranging from computer classes to baby wellness and first aid, we offer these free to the public and have professional facilators. Facilitors are compensated for their time and expertise.
