Error Messages in MS Internet Explorer

Error Messages one might encounter while using Microsoft's Internet Explorer and what to do about them.

MSIE for WIN95:

"Illegal Operation - Invalid Page Default"
Most likely caused by a corruption in Cache. Run Scandisk, then clear Cache and History files.
"IE caused an exception in winnet.dll"
Scandisk, then clear Cache and History.
"Invalid Page Fault in kernel32dll"
Download the patch for the WIN95 Kernel at: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/krnlupd.htm and install it.
"IEXPLORE caused a General Protection Fault in modue STBLS128.drv"
This indicates a problem with the STB video drivers. Update the driver at: http://www.stb.com
When I click on "The Internet" icon on my desktop, I no longer get a connect screen.
Solution: Open Explorer. Click VIEW, go down to OPTIONS, then click on the CONNECTION tab. Make sure that "Connect to the Internet as needed" is checked and that I-2000 is chosen as the Dial Up Networking connection to use.

Also - (and I know this will work) Double Click on My Computer. Double Click on Dial Up Networking. Double click on the I-2000 icon. Click connect. This will connect you to I-2000 but will NOT bring up the browser. Click on "The Internet" on the desktop to bring up the browser. The next time the customer goes to use "The Internet" it will be re- associated with the connect screen.

"I forgot my Content Advisor password" or "I was playing around with the Content Advisor and now I can't get to your home page".
Call Interstate 2000, Inc. for info
Divide by zero error (or divide error):
This can be a regsrv error, a page fault, or a GPF in wininet.dll.
Solution:
1.) Click Start
2.) Click Shutdown
3.) Click Restart Computer in MSDOS mode.
4.) At prompt type cd/windows
5.) Type SMARTDRV . If nothing happens, OK.
6.) Type deltree tempor~1 respond with a Y to the yes/no question.
7.) Type deltree history Also respond Y.
8.) Reboot

If History Folder & Cache don't work after this:
1.) Empty Cache in IE Properties (VIEW - OPTIONS - ADVANCED - SETTINGS - EMPTY FOLDER.
2.) From Start/Run type: regsvr32 /u cachevu.dll, choose OK, reboot
3.) From Strat/Run type: regsvr32 cachevu.dll, choose OK, reboot.
Problem: Cannot open Internet Explorer Window.
Solution: Only 1/2 of the setup was complete. Go to My Computer --> ProgramFiles --> Internet Explorer --> Sign Up Folder. Then double click on signup.htm
MAIL -- Damaged Inbox (or outbox):
Click on MY COMPUTER -->C DRIVE (assuming Internet Explorer & WIN95 are located on the C drive) --> PROGRAM FILES --> INTERNET EXPLORER -->INTERNET MAIL & NEWS --> MAIL. For a damaged inbox, delete inbox.mbx and inbox.idx. For a damaged outbox delete outbox.mbx and outbox.idx. Internet mail will recreate good (uncorrupted) copies of those files.
"Illegal Operation: This program will be shut down".
Some things to try:
A) In MSIE: Go to VIEW --> OPTIONS --> ADVANCED. Look for Enable JAVA JIT compiler. If it is checked remove the check mark.
B) Change the # of colors in Video Driver Control Panel --> Display Settings.
C) Check for an updated video driver for your video card.
DUN (Dial Up Networking) freezes on disconnect:
Solution:
A) go to SHUTDOWN --> Restart Computer in MSDOS mode
B) Type cd\windows\system (to get in the right directory)
C) Type rename vnbt.386 vnbt.sav
D) Type exit to return to Windows
Errors in module DISPLAY, GDI, DIBENG or your video driver:
Usually indicates a video driver problem. Try setting the video driver to a different screen size and/or number of colors (Control Panel, Display, Settings).

Another thing to try is Control Panel, System, Performance, Graphics, and reduce the Hardware Acceleration.

If one of those "fixes" the problem, you should get an updated video driver from your video card manufacturer. They probably have a web site. Even if the above don't help, you should still check for updated drivers.

Another possible cause of problems is a corrupted browser cache. Try clearing it:
MSIE: View, Options, Advanced, Temporary Internet Files, Settings, Empty Folder

Windows 3.1:

"Cannot find c:\iedial.exe" when the user clicks on the I-2000 icon:
Move the four statement Explorer put at the end of autoexec.bat to just under the path statement then reboot. If the user goes to DOS then types SET, and does not see "IEPPP=...." PCTCP=....." then the four statements are placed wrongly in autoexec.bat
PCMCIA modems DO NOT work with the ShivaPPP dialer.
The following is a possible workaround for this: Edit system.ini and put ClaimPort = 0 in the ShivaPPP section of system.ini Also verify that comm.drv=comm.drv in system.ini. Might also try reinstalling the card services.
"PCTPC 133 VxD not found"
PCMCIA modem driver is loaded on computer but there is no PCMCIA modem in the card slot.
mIRC does not work with Explorer:
In mIRC, go into Setup. Go into the LocalInfo dialog box. In the 'Local Host' box type domain name (i.e. jellico.com). Leave the IP Address field blank. Check the IP Address box rather than the Local Host box.
USR modems:
Change &D2 to &D3 in init string
Transparent Window:
Explorer connects, but browser only shows top part (buttons & menu), the place where the web page should be is transparent. Temporary solution: Minimize the browser, then maximise it. The page should then be visible.

Permanent solution: Edit iexplore.ini Look for the section called [Document Windows]. Change the values in this section to:
x=1
y=1
width=600
height=-400

Cannot connect:
One thing to check for is more than one winsock.dll's on the system. Delete these or rename them.
Dialer icon does not appear when IE is installed.
Solution: Probably the autoexec.bat problem (See # 1 above). Might also set environment space in config.sys wih this string:
C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM /E:1024 /P
PCTPAPI.DLL error
Probably autoexec.bat problem (see # 1 above)
)If modem won't work well at ALL:
try editing modems2.ini and replace the init string with ATZ (this forces factory defaults).
"Out of environment space error"
Put the line
SHELL=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM /E:1024 /P
in autoexec.bat. Also check placement of four IE statements in autoexec.bat (see # 1 above).
RPI modem:
Check "Terminal Window after dialing" (From the properties button in the connect screen), then sign on manually with the ppp:username, (at the USERNAME prompt) and your I-2000 password (at the PASSWORD prompt). Click on the CONTINUE button when you recieve the message "Your IP address is ......"
With RPI modem: Problem: Unable to establish Dial In Connection.
Enable "Open Terminal Window after dialing (see above) then have them log on manually.
ICWMAN16 error:
autoexec.bat problem (see above).
WinModems:
New (version 3.0) IE for Windows 3.1 only detects the following brands of winmodems:
AST 14.4 Data Fax Modem (RPI version)
Maxtech 14.4 Data Fax (RPI) XM144I
Best Data Smart One 1442FX (FTX, RPI)
Best Data Smart One 1442F (FT, RPI)
Logicode 14.4 Data Fax (RPI)
USR 14.4 winmodem

Make sure the modem driver has been installed correctly. They may want to contact the modem manufacturer for comments.

Normally winmodems use nonstandard I/O addresses. Open ShivaPPP.ini and edit the COMM port settings to match the I/O address and IRQ of the winmodem.

The "Autodetect Modem" screen will often detect a winmodem as a Standard modem, so you will have to go back, check the bo that says "Don't detect my modem I will choose it from a list" then manually choose the correct winmodem. Use the following info to make the modem work if not detectable: A) Check the Rockwel page (http://www.nb.rockwell.com) for the latest WinRPI drivers.

Change the windows / system.ini to include this:
[386Enh]
device=c:\iexplore\iewcomm.386 (assuming IE was installed to c:\iexplore)
If the modem is a RPI modem (send ATI3 to the modem and see if it is RPI or RPI+) place these settings in MODEMS2.INI for the modem:
InitString=AT&F&C1&D2&K3+H3
AnswerInit=AT&F&C1&D2&K3+H3SO=1
BPSRate=57600
DTRHangup=Yes
PortDriver=2
PortDriverName=iewcomm.386
HelperName=iecomhlp.exe
If the modem is a RPI+ modem use these strings:
InitString=AF&F&C1&D3&K3+H11W2
AnswerInit=AT&F&C1&D3&K3+H11WSO=1
BPSRate=57600
FlowControl=None
DTRHangup=Yes
PortDriver=2
PoerDriverName=iewcomm.386
HelperName=iecomhlp.exe
RPI Modem:
Open "Terminal Window after dialing (in I-2000 dial up box properties). Then sign on manually (using ppp:username etc.) See above.
"Unable to establish dial in connection":
Open Terminal window after dialing (see above) and try a manual login (ppp:username etc.).
GPF's:
In config.sys make sure:
Files=99
Buffers=30
Shell=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM C:\DOS /p /e:1024

Might also set swap file to permanent rather than temporary, EXCEPT if it is a 386, set SWAP file to Temporary.

"File not found winnet.286" during install:
You are probably running windows in standard mode. You must be running in enhanced mode.
"The Dial in connection was lost":
Lower modem speed especially if you have a 8250 UART.

Misc issues (probably not Windows version specific):

If IE times out after connect:
Look for winsock.dll conflicts. In the Windows 3.1 version the dll is called winsock.dll. In WIN95 it is called wsock32.dll. You only want one file of each in the C:/WINDOWS directory. (Can have backups elsewhee).
Modem timeout in older US Robotics Modems:
Manually specify the correct modem in the settings, and set baud rate to 38400 (or 57600 if machine can handle it). Edit modems2.ini and add &B1 to init string. If that fails, add &K0&M0 to init string. This will disable al error correcton and compression which will make the modem connect faster and prevent possible timeouts.
USR Modems (& USR Clones):
Manually edit modems.ini or modems2.ini to change init string to AT&F1sS27=4810=50 This may cut down on disconnects and speed up the modem.

USR Clone modem: &H1&R2&B1 may improve preformance if interface rate set to 38400 or 57600.

Slow browser startup:
Can be caused by overly large cache or history file. Go to VIEW - OPTIONS and then the Advanced tab (cache) and the Navigation tab (history).
MSIE locks up at specific sites:
One possible cause is an outdated video driver. Find out make of video card and check manufacturer for new driver.
Rockwell Chipset modems:
To find out if a modem has the Rockwell chipset:
Type in ATi3 (in diagnostics pane in WIN95 modem properties or in a term program). See if modem respnds: RPI
Type IN AT+H If you get "ERROR" it is not RPI
Examine the modem responses from: ATi3 and ATi6
If modem has RPI chipset, try adding +H0 to init string which switches off RPI error correction and reduce baud rate to 9600 or even 4800.

Rockwell: 1-800-854-8099

OS2 WARP:
We know very little about this. OS2 WARP probably does not handle dynamic IP addressing well. We may have to assign you a static IP address. Call Interstate 2000 for details.
